Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant attended the hand-over ceremony at Lochaber’s aluminium smelter today.
“I was glad to be there to hear details about the planned boost to the local economy,” said Mrs Grant.
“I look forward to seeing an aluminium wheel manufacturing facility being created, an exciting project for the region, both for jobs on site and for spin-off jobs in the community.”
Mrs Grant and her Labour Highlands and Islands MSP colleague, David Stewart, were involved in supporting a continued future for smelter from early this year, meeting management and union representatives and launching an i-petition and paper petition, Support Our Rio Tinto, which attracted hundreds of signatures.
Labour Councillor Brian Murphy was also involved in the campaign.
Mr Stewart added: “It’s great to see a new future for the last remaining smelter in the UK. It will be cause for celebration in households across the area this Christmas.”
