UHI Selected to Deliver Graduate Medical Programme

That the Parliament congratulates the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) on being one of the three Scottish universities chosen to deliver Scotland’s first graduate medical programme; notes that the programme will be run in collaboration with the medical schools in St Andrews and Dundee and partner NHS boards; understands that the four-year programme, which is likely to start in 2018-19, is designed to meet the current and future needs of the country’s NHS; notes that the programme is to have a specific focus on recruitment of graduates to increase the likelihood of trainees remaining in Scotland, particularly in rural and remote areas; notes that, through the initiative, a significant number of medical students will access and undertake the majority of their training in communities around the Highlands and Islands region; considers that this collaborative venture will enhance the UHI’s existing work in addressing remote and rural healthcare and will be another important development of the School of Health, Social Care and Life Sciences, and congratulates the UHI on this achievement.
