10 November 2011

Unemployment in the Highlands amongst the 18-24 year old age group has increased to just over 2,000 in the past 4 years, an increase of almost 1,000.

( Number unemployed as at September 2011 - 2,050 ; increase since September 2007 - 975)

Commenting on the figures, Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, Labour’s Spokesperson for Finance and Infrastructure said,

" Our young people represent the future of the Highlands and Islands, but their future is being threatened by being out of work . The last thing we want is another lost generation and urgent action needs to be taken to avoid that and provide our young people with opportunites to build for themselves a bright future.

" The Tory-led Coalition’s policies of cutting public spending fast and deep has meant the waste of the talents and the skills of so many young people in the Highlands and Islands.

"The SNP Government’s inertia on joblessness results from its obsession with its referendum on independence.

" Labour’s priority is the revival of the economy and getting people back into employment which restores security and certainty into people’s lives and plans for their future."
