The December 2011 figures released for Job Seekers Allowance claimants show that unemployment across Highland , Moray and Argyll and Bute rose by almost 400 last month
Commenting on figures released on the increase in the number of job seekers allowances claimants in the Highland, Argyll and Bute and Moray council areas , Rhoda Grant Highlands & Islands Labour MSP said,
"Across these areas unemployment rose last month by almost 400.
"Unemployment now totals 7,500 in these three areas alone, which makes grim reading and shows that the UK Government’s economic plan is hurting, but it isn’t working in the Highlands".
Mrs Grant continued,
"The Scottish Government’s priorities are elsewhere, obsessed with its plans for a referendum two years away in the future.
"The Tory-Lib Dem government have been cutting too far and too fast , and they have no plan for economic growth in the Highlands. Rising unemployment is the price of their failed policies.
"In contrast, Labour offers a five point plan to create jobs, boost growth , support low-income families and help small businesses."
| council area | % rate | increase |
| Highland | 2.9 per cent | 223 |
| Moray | 2.6 per cent | 82 |
| Argyll and Bute | 3.6 per cent | 87 |
