Highlands and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant, Labour’s Rural Economy and Connectivity spokesperson, said:
“It remains very unclear how this new system will work.
“The Scottish Government has created a new board which appears to have overall control over the development agencies, including HIE.
“It is unclear whether this new organisation will have power over the budget and direction of HIE and what role HIE will now have. Many questions remain unanswered.
“While we await the detailed proposals, we need to make sure that a centralising agenda by the back door is not acceptable and HIE must retain the power to assist its own region in a manner that fits local needs.
“The SNP Government has a track record for centralisation and cannot do this with our enterprise agencies which must be able to respond to local need.”
