Rhoda’s welcome for Transocean's discussion on stranded rig

19 August 2016

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, attended a packed meeting in Carloway Community Centre on Thursday evening (18.08.16) to discuss the removal of the stranded Transocean Winner oil rig.

The 17,000-tonne drilling rig, which had 280 metric tonnes of diesel on board, ran aground recently at the beach of Dalmore in the Carloway area of Lewis during a severe storm.

The rig was under tow when it became detached from the tug boat.

Rhoda said :

“I attended the packed meeting in Carolway on Thursday evening where obvious concerns were raised about the safe removal of the rig.

"The community want to work alongside Transocean and the salvage team to facilitate an early resolution to the situation.£

She continued :

“I am glad Transocean have met with the community and provided some of the information people were seeking and I hope they will continue to keep people informed as the salvage operation gets under way."
