GP provision in south of Skye and Lochalsh : MSP calls for
full consultation
16 July 2010
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant has urged NHS Highland to fully
consult patients in the south of Skye about changes which could see local GP
surgeries close for half a day once a week.
The proposal is part of a planned redesign of GP provision on the island and in
Lochalsh.
NHS Highland says it is seeking to improve practices in
Broadford, Sleat, Carbost and Glenelg which serve about 4,000 people.
Doctors' surgeries in the south of Skye would not close on the same day.
Patients' calls to the GP on the afternoon their surgery was
shut would go through to a neighbouring practice.
Out-of-hours medical cover for Skye and Lochalsh is also under review because
the current set up is not working, according to NHS Highland.
Mrs Grant said: "It is vitally important NHS Highland engages with patients
about what is being proposed and takes on board their views.
"All too often NHS Highland is handing down decisions with no dialogue with the
people they should be serving."
